New Review! – HAG Futu Chair
The HAG Futu is the first completely new chair to be introduced by HAG since 2002. The HAG Futu is a chair that’s simple, elegant and incredibly intelligent. Design-wise it is a breath of fresh air in a world full of “me-too” chairs. Behind the clean design there is a revolutionary interior. At the core of the chair, HAG debuts its new inBalance mechanism – a unique technology that allows you to adjust the tilt resistance with extreme ease according to individual needs and the latest ergonomic principles.
Though the HAG Futu carries all the functions available on today’s most advanced chairs, it lacks the clunky, intrustive levers and knobs that disturb the visual expression. It is simple, easy to use and just as well suited to large office landscapes as to individual offices. Incredibly, 97% of the chair is recyclable and 50% of the chair’s components are made from previously recycled materials. Way to go HAG!
The Futu chair is scheduled to be launched in March of 2009. HAG is so excited about its new chair, it has created an entirely new website for its launch:

I tried the Futu chair out at Neocon in Chicago and was also very impressed by it. It kinda felt like I was floating on air. I’ve never had that feeling sitting in a task chair before.
Regarding the price, The HAG guy at the show said they were targeting a $1,000 list price, which would mean about $650-$700 to the consumer on the internet. I’m not sure if that price includes the arms or not. I guess we’ll find out in the next couple of months.
i love this blog. i have been using hag chairs for a while now and just was shopping a little and found this site. plenty of great information. i have been considering a new chair and this futu looks amazing. does anyone know if we will be able to get this chair from u.s. dealers as a “quick ship” or if we will have to wait for the chair to be shipped from europe? do you think there are any showrooms around where i might be able to check out an early floor model of the chair or is hag keeping a tight lid on this thing?
HAG has given us their preliminary pricing for the Futu chair. It will be available in the armless version for approximately $559.65. The price with the arms will be about $616.85. We laud HAG for the aggressive pricing on the chair. It certainly seems that it is a lot of chair for the money. It is our understanding that the chairs will initially have a lead time of approximately two weeks, and that the factory will begin taking orders in March or April.
Just ordered one today. Got the Blue FutuKnit color. I’ll let you all know my thoughts after I try it out
It’s me again
I’ve been using my new HAG Futu for about 2 months now. Here are my observations:
PLUSES:
1 – I LOVE the inBalance mechanism. I thought HAG had a pretty amazing “Balanced Movement” mechanism before this improvement, but this brings it to new heights. The new system still forces you to move throughout the workday, but it feels more secure and integrated than the “Balanced Movement” system in my old H03.
2 – The Knit back is a revolution. After being in the chair for several weeks, I realized that this foamless back is really what adds the icing to the cake. It forms to my body, and when coupled with the awesome seat cushion and inBalance mechanism, it’s the closest thing to floating on air that I’ve experienced
3-Very sleek design. The chair’s lines are great and I really dig how the controls are concealed/flush with the chair structure. An added plus is the very cool “seat slider” that actually moves the back of the chair while keeping the seat on the inBalans box. It is very smooth.
4 – The price. My fully loaded Futu came in at under $700, delivered. It’s way more chair than a Leap chair or Aeron chair for a lot less money.
MINUSES:
1 – The lumbar support feels a little cheap compared to some of the other HAG chairs I’ve sat in. The lumbar support is good, due largesly to the Futu Knit back, but the mechanism falls short for me. You basically grab handles that are on either side of the seat back and move them manually up and down. The movement in this mechanism is not as smooth and refined as it could be.
2 – The only other negative comment I would offer is that the width adjustment for the arms is not as fast to adjust as I had hoped. It’s not hard to do, but rather than adjusting both arms at once (like on the H05), you adjust each arm separately. I guess if you’re the only person using the chair this is not a big deal – you can just set it once and you’re done.
Overall, I am very happy with the Futu. I’m sure HAG will address the chair’s few shortcomings soon. They always seem to.
Dear Donna,
Thanks for your thoughts on the new Futu chair. The lumbar support has been redesigned and incorporated into the seat back. The new and improved Futu seat back will begin shipping on July 31, 2009. All U.S. shipments of newly-ordered HAG Futu chairs will be delayed until July 31st and will incorporate the new and improved lumbar support mechanism.
We have also improved the arm adjustment mechanism and the new arm adjustment is much smoother than in the first generation HAG Futu.
HAG will continue to make improvements on the Futu chair to further solidify its position as the most affordable advanced ergonomic chair on the market.
Thinking of ordering this chair from the UK. Should I delay order to get new lumbar support back or ?
Thank you for your feed back
Louise
All European shipments of the HAG Futu already have the improvements incorporated. The “new” Futus began shipping several weeks ago in Europe. I guess it took a while to get them shipped over to the U.S.
Thinking of the Futu chair for my home office. I have heard that the Futu chair ships in Canada starting next week – is this version the “new” and improved one? Can anyone confirm this? Thanks!
The Futu chair has been available in Canada since the U.S. launch. We are a HAG dealer in Montreal and have been carrying the chair since May. The guy who posted above is correct, all Futu chairs ordered now in North America will be the latest and greatest version and will ship from the factory on or about 31 July.
I am looking for a HAG dealer in Montreal – can you let me know if you have a showroom where I can see the Futu chair?
Thanks
Michael,
This website is an informational blog for HAG enthusiasts only. We are not an e-commerce site. We recommend that you try HAG’s North American distribution partner, Izzy Design, to locate a dealer in your area.
Good luck!
Thanks for the link. I have been searching and I have been told a HAG chair will help with my lower back issues.
Thanks again
I am thinking of buying the Futu chair. After reading that the lumbar support has been recently improved, I was wondering how can I check to be sure that the chair I’ll be buying has the improved lumbar support and not the old one?
Thanks
Just got my new Futu today. A few observations for potential buyers:
1) the green colour is not as vibrant as in the marketing photos. I wish I bought another colour (like gray) instead.
2) the chair looks surprisingly compact compared to Herman Miller and other ergonomic chairs. At 5′2″ with medium build, it feels just “right”; taller people might want to try out the chair before buying as it does not come in different sizes.
3) the styling of the chair is very sleek, clean and timeless.
4) the adjustments for arms to make them wider and the lumbar support are difficult to move despite this chair being the “improved” version. If you are the only person using the chair, this should not be a problem.
5) love the tilting mechanism – good balance and adjustable.
6) the lock works…but really as someone who like to tilt the chair back and forth while thinking, it spoils my fun.
7) lumbar support seems weak – I keep adjusting it to get it just right but cannot.
seat cushion feels good and firm.
Anyone thinking of buying a Futu (or any HAG product), consider finding a reputable dealer that has a good return policy or will allow you to try out the chair. The dealer that I bought the chair from was responsive and I couldn’t be happier with the experience (and the chair!).
To Denis above-
All chairs shipping now have the improved lumbar support. Any older versions that were in dealer’s hands have been retrofitted.
[...] here in Boston and it was, among other things, introducing a fabulous new chair from Izzy, The HAG Futu Chair. This chair has some interesting new features that I haven’t seen on too many other chairs [...]
I’ve used a Credo for 10-years and the low back support is excellent, trouble is I have never been able to get the neck rest right and consequently get upper back trouble. I’ve also tried the chair without headrest but the upper back support is, in my opinion none too clever. Is the Futu likely to offer the same excellent low back support but better upper back support? For me, a perfect chair would be the low back support of the Credo but with a backrest which perhaps went higher to offer better upper back support – ala Herma Miller’s Aeron. Thanks
Hi Jack, I also have had a Credo for a while now. What size back do you have on your chair? I got the high back version and it has been great. I am slightly under 6′ tall and have never had any trouble. I actually had the headrest for my chair but ended up not using in so much so i took it off. Maybe your problem is that you have a lower back version of the Credo?
My Credo was actually fitted for me and is the high back, I’m spot on 6ft tall barefoot. I’m seeking a chair preferably without a head rest – one less thing to bother about at the very least. Thanks for you comments. Any ideas (anyone) about a good choice of chair for me to consider?

I sat on this chair at the Orgatec show in Germany. It is AMAZING. I have sat in a HAG Credo chair for about 15 years now and I want the Futu to be my next chair. Does anybody know what the price will be?
